At least 50 Nigerian soldiers have been killed in the Niger Delta region following military operations against militants blowing up oil and gas pipelines, the Niger Delta Avengers said in a statement on Tuesday.
The militants said the soldiers died because they were deployed without “amphibian training”. More would have died, they said on Twitter, without the help of local fishermen.
The conflict in the Niger Delta region has halved Nigeria’s oil output from about 2.5 million barrels a day to 1.2 million barrels per day.
The British government had warned early this month that military force alone may not be enough to secure oil pipelines and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to address the root causes.
But Mr. Buhari, a retired general, warned the militants in a national broadcast on Sunday to mark his first year in office, saying that those blowing up pipelines would be arrested and defeated.
He said he would engage leaders in the region but did not make reference to militants as possible participants in those talks to bring peace.
This is a developing story. TheSimonAtebaNews would update as events unfold.
