The Sokoto government would help citizens take full advantage of President Muhammadu Buhari’s social intervention projects in the state, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said on Tuesday, as he donated an office apartment as well as vehicles for proper take off of such projects.

Mr. Tambuwal announced the donation when he received the Special Adviser to the President on Social Intervention, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, who was on a courtesy visit to the northwestern state, his office said in a statement sent to TheSimonAtebaNews.

The social intervention programmes introduced by the Buhari administration are aimed at addressing challenges of poverty in Nigeria.

Nigeria, one of Africa’s richest countries, sadly, has at least 66 million extremely poor people, including at least 2.1 million malnourished children, according to a recent report released by UNICEF. With high unemployment numbers, low oil prices and a mono-economy that is teetering towards a recession, President Buhari has said he wants to make things less difficult for Nigerians already stuck in squalor while he diversifies the economy away from oil.

Theft and gargantuan corruption over 58 years of oil wealth have left Nigerians wondering whether black gold discovered in Bayelsa in 1956 and sold for the first time two years after in 1958 was actually a black deadly curse that has now paralysed Africa’s most populous nation.

“Sokoto state stands to benefit from those intervention programmes, so we will partner partner with the FG by giving any required support and cooperation so as to achieve the desired objectives,” Mr. Tambuwal said, according to a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Imam Imam.

He said the state government was ready to support all policies of Federal Government which he said were aimed at improving the living standard of the people.

According to him, already a office apartment for the various schemes equipped with modern office equipment has been provided, while vehicles will soon be provided for their smooth take off.

“In addition to this, a Desk Officer for the programme has been appointed and process are on to appoint a Special Adviser on Social Intervention in Sokoto,” he added.

Mrs. Uwais said they were in Sokoto to enlighten people on the benefit of FG’s various intervention projects, adding that her team would interract with stakeholders to find out how to encourage collaboration with their office and state government.
