The Edo state governorship election slated for Saturday should go ahead despite a surprising request by security agents that it should be postponed due to doubtful terror threats by Boko Haram, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said on Wednesday.

Governor Ayodele Fayose condemned the planned election postponement by security agents, saying that the All Progressives Congress was afraid to lose the election to the People’s Democratic Party.

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian police on Wednesday advised INEC to postpone the September 10, 2016 gubernatorial election in Edo state because of some doubtful intelligence allegedly uncovered overnight after President Muhammadu Buhari left the state.

President Buhari and APC governors stormed Edo on Tuesday to campaign for the APC candidate candidate, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

But a day after the grandiose event, the security agents announced that there were sudden security threats and the election must be postponed.

However, ThisDay newspaper quoted the commission’s leadership as denying knowledge of any such development and advising that the election should be allowed to continue as earlier scheduled.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Saturday election, Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu, had warned there were alleged plans to postpone the election and tie its reasons to the Muslim Sallah.
