The crisis rocking Nigeria’s main opposition party may soon come to an end as the two warring factions of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, resolved on Tuesday to work together.

At the moment, the PDP has two factions; one led by Ahmed Makarfi and the other by Ali Modu Sheriff. Sheriff is the former governor of Borno state while Makarfi is the former governor of Katsina state.

The crisis erupted early this year after Modu Sheriff was elected PDP chairman at a controversial convention but was not recognised by many other party members.

Those members scheduled to have another convention of the party in Port-Harcourt, but security agents prevented them from meeting. They met somewhere else and made Makarfi leader of the caretaker committee pending a convention they decided to hold at a later date.

Both factions met in Abuja on Tuesday to iron out their differences and addressed the media at a joint press conference, reports said.

Premium Times reported that “the caretaker committee was led to the meeting by its National Secretary, Ben Obi, while Cairo Ojougbo, the deputy national chairman of the Sheriff faction, led its members”.

The newspaper quoted Mr. Ojougboh, who read the text of the conference, as saying that the groups also agreed to constitute a joint committee for final reconciliation.

“In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party, the PDP since the loss of the 2015 general elections, after 16 years of uninterrupted leadership at the centre, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds, and bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that can bring sanity to our democratic process, bringing relief to the teeming supporters of our great party, the PDP and to the benefit of our country Nigeria.

“Based on the above, we have both agreed to consult widely with all relevant organs of the party; set up a joint committee that will carry out a holistic reconciliation of all aggrieved segments of our party across the country and in diaspora; pursue the vision of the founding fathers of our great party the PDP,” he said.
