Abbey College Cambridge’s brand new state-of-the-art campus was officially unveiled to its new Nigerian students on Thursday 13 October.
The outstanding new campus has been built to strengthen its international offering and to meet the continuing growth in demand for places at this prestigious college.
Guests were given an exclusive tour of the new building and each department, with demonstrations in classrooms and laboratories so the students could familiarise themselves with their new home.
The facility has been designed to meet the exacting requirements of students who emanate from over 30 countries around the world, ensuring it will be a perfect fit for their learning and boarding needs.
The thriving boarding school for international students now includes, 120 ensuite bedrooms with full board and a further 130 rooms next door to the campus. The campus also includes 42 fully equipped classrooms, 12 state-of-the-art science laboratories, a library, two dedicated music studios and a new art studio. Not only that, but there is a contemporary restaurant serving all student meals, a coffee bar, gym and a sports hall, all on campus.
During the opening ceremony members of staff and students including the Principal Dr Julian Davies, Graham Able, the Deputy Chairman of the Alpha Plus Group and the Head of Student Council all gave speeches.
An official unveiling of a bespoke photo mural featuring some of the college’s students took place to mark the special event, this was then followed by a spectacular firework display.
Dr Julian Davies, Principal at Abbey College Cambridge commented: “We are thrilled to welcome our Nigerian students to celebrate the official opening of the new campus here at Abbey College Cambridge. It is a momentous occasion and everyone has worked incredibly hard to complete this spectacular school.
“We are fortunate enough that this campus is in the new heart of Cambridge and only a ten minute walk from the train station. We are also next door to one of Cambridge University’s colleges which we have a good relationship with.”
Student Oreoluwa Okubajo said: “As students, the new campus provides an environment that stimulates and allows us to be who we want to be.”
Offering a wide range of courses designed to meet the needs of students from 13 years and older, the success of the college is second to none. This is evident in the excellent A-Level pass rate in the past 10 years which has seen over 80% of students achieve A* to B grades every year.
The new campus is also equipped with the latest technology to allow teachers to make the most out of the time they have with the students, which will only enhance the college’s already impressive pass rates.
Abbey College Cambridge is a highly successful college. It has been ranked as the top sixth form college in Cambridge for the past 15 years and is currently amongst the top five in the UK. On completing A-Levels at Abbey College Cambridge around 30% of the student body each year gain entry in to top five UK universities: Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, Imperial and UCL.
