historically, the US economy grew with high tariffs,
and exploitation/conquest of a virgin continent’s natural inventory.
For less economically developed nations, “free trade” wiith established nations
produces different results. It “legally” transfers natural wealth to foreign nations.
It directs that the infrastructure and labor be directed to serve foreign interests.
And critically, it generates a domestic mercantile class geared to serve foreign markets and demands.
Because of their linkage to foreign powers, those foreign powers will typically provide weapons
and assistance to maintain the domestic power of their dependent mercantile offspring/satraps.
