Fred Agbaje, a popular human rights activist and lawyer, has died in a London hospital on Saturday, November 28, 2016. Agbaje spent the last two weeks of his life in a coma and he died of an undisclosed ailment. The vice chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr. Monday Ubani has described Agbaje as “an erudite lawyer and activist”. “His death is shocking and painful,” Ubani said. “He was a foremost human rights lawyer and the legal profession in Nigeria and beyond will definitely miss him. I condole with his family, and pray for them.” There has been no official statement from members of his family regarding the cause of his death. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday, commensurate with the late lawyer’s family, friends and colleagues. Agbaje is one the human rights activists who support Buhari’s anti-corruption tactics. In a statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, the president said he received the news of Agbaje’s death with shock. He said, “He was an ardent advocate against corruption and canvasser for internal democracy in political parties, who also believed strongly in the sanctity of the ballot box.”
