CEO Brian Krzanich and team have already dived into the deep end of the Internet of Things (IoT) pool, and it’s become increasingly clear in the past few months that a key component of Intel‘s (NASDAQ: INTC) plan involves getting its tech into autonomous cars. To that end, Intel has announced the formation of a new division it calls the Automated Driving Group (ADG) to bring Krzanich’s vision “for the future of automated cars” to fruition.
Intel said the new ADG unit will be led by Doug Davis, who has been with the chipmaker for over 30 years. Davis will report to a new boss however — former ARM Holdings executive Tom Lantzsch will lead Intel’s IoT Group as SVP and general manager. The IoT Group oversees the new ADG division. Lantzsch was with ARM for more than 10 years prior to it being acquired by Japanese tech giant Softbank for $31 billion in early September.
News of the ADG division’s launch and Lantzsch’s hiring comes on the heels of several recent “smart car” agreements and initiatives, including a partnership with autonomous driving specialist Mobileye and a leading German automaker in July to bring solutions “for highly and fully automated driving into series production by 2021.”
More recently, Intel announced it was committing $250 million over the next two years to further its smart car ambitions, and once again partnered with Mobileye along with auto components king Delphi on yet another project to help turn Krzanich’s self-driving car hopes into reality.
