With multiple smart car partnerships inked recently with computer vision and machine learning leader Mobileye and Delphi Automotive, among others, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) is wasting no time in pursuing CEO Brian Krzanich’s plan to carve out a healthy role for itself in the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT) space.
Getting its products into smart home devices is another key component of that plan, and it took a major step forward recently with a deal with Amazon Web Services. The joint effort with AWS is focused on two smart home initiatives. The first is intended to advance the ecosystem by integrating an Intel-developed smart home hub with AWS’ Alexa Skills, which is the voice service behind its Echo system.
Secondly, the two will incorporate “an Intel-based smart speaker reference design” with Alexa that will give hardware manufacturers a quick, relatively easy means of developing voice-enabled devices for the home.
Intel will also use AWS’ Greengrass software to provide a “robust, scalable platform” to expand its IoT asset-tracking solutions for the industrial market. Though commercial IoT is expected to drive much of the staggering growth forecast as the market matures, the opportunity smart homes offer is also significant.
According to one study, smart home technology will generate $121.73 billion in revenue by 2022. At $689 million in sales last quarter, Intel’s IoT unit is small relative to its $15.8 billion in total revenue. However, IoT was Intel’s fastest growing division by a wide margin, jumping 19% compared to a year ago. These new deals should stoke Intel’s IoT fire even further.
