On December 9, Kirk Douglas turns 100 years old, making him one of the last living actors who appeared in Hollywood’s golden age. Born Issur Danielovitch, Douglas was not the typical Hollywood star of his time and always refused to conform to standards. To this day, he fights for progressive causes and even wrote a piece for the Huffington Post in September, urging voters to remember how America was built by immigrants. “I have lived a long, good life. I will not be here to see the consequences if this evil takes root in our country. But your children and mine will be,” Douglas wrote.
To many, Douglas remains Spartacus. To some, he is Vincent Van Gogh. To others, he’s the rebellious Ned Land who annoys Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He’s an actor who could transform before our eyes, but still brought a unique intensity that linked each of his movies.
