Fabrizia Di Lorenzo
Berlin, Germany is reeling from a horrific attack in which a man drove a likely hijacked Polish truck into a crowded sidewalk at a Christmas market in Breitscheidplatz. Fabrizia Di Lorenzo, a 31-year-old Italian national, has now been identified as a likely victim. The Guardian said her family members have traveled to Germany to provide DNA samples after she did not show up for work. The first victim to be identified was the truck driver, Lukasz Urban, who is not believed to be the suspect who drive the truck into the crowd. Instead, it’s believed that Urban’s truck was hijacked. His body was found in his cab. Instead, police are seeking a Tunisian asylum seeker by the name of Anis Amri in connection with the attack, which ISIS has claimed responsibility for perpetrating. Amri was on the radar of police for months for suspect ties to ISIS, but a judge did not order him deported even after he was allegedly found with forged documents, according to reports in German news media. The horrific attack claimed the lives of 12 people, including Urban. The identities have not all been released, and this post will be updated as more victims are named. The attack closely resembled one in Nice, France, in August, when a radical Islamic terrorist drove a truck into a crowd of people at a Bastille Day fireworks celebration, killing 86 people. Germany has been torn with controversies involving an influx of refugees and asylum seekers, with some blaming Chancellor Merkel for allowing too many people into the country. There were reports that officials had wanted Amri subjected to intensive monitoring even before the attack occurred. Police initially arrested another man, a refugee from Pakistan, but it’s not believed that man was not involved in the attack. Here are photos to remember the lives of the victims in Berlin.
