Former President Yahya Jammeh should leave The Gambia for peace to reign, internationally recognised President, Adama Barrow, has told a journalist in Dakar.
Dakar-based journalist Nicolas Haque who spoke to Mr. Barrow said on Twitter the newly sworn in president told him Mr. Jammeh should leave the country.
Mr. Barrow had earlier said there was no need to Mr. Jammeh to go.
Mr. Barrow defeated Mr. Jammeh in the presidential election of December 1. Mr. Jammeh first conceded defeat but changed his mind, saying the election was flawed. He challenged the results in court but suffered setbacks.
Eventually, he turned to the National Assembly that passed a last minute resolution to keep him in power for another three months. But the regional West African body asked him to go after negotiation failed.
He did not and troops entered The Gambia on Thursday. There were some final chance negotiations taking place today. They might storm the presidential palace if these last talks failed.
