The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), at the weekend, accused Nigerian elites including some serving governors of hijacking the local government system in Nigeria.
The union spoke through its national president, Mr. Ibrahim khali, in a zonal rally held in Calabar, where it re-echoed the need for local government autonomy in the country.
The rally, which was flagged-off at the freedom park in Calabar metropolis, attracted NULGE membership across the six states in the south-south geo political zone in Nigeria.
In his address, Khali encouraged NULGE members to be determined in the struggle for local government autonomy in Nigeria, assuring that victory was in sight.
He emphasized the need for inclusive governance in Nigeria, as propounded by the founding fathers of democracy, warning that NULGE will no longer accept a system where the third tier of government is controlled by the political class.
“The local government system is dying in Nigeria. This noble idea has been hijacked by the political elites for their personal gains”, he said.
According to Khali, a vote for local government autonomy in Nigeria is a vote for financial and administrative effectiveness; grass root development; national security and a guarantee for democracy.
