On July 15, 2008, Cindy Anthony called 911 to report that she had not seen her granddaughter, 2-year-old Caylee Anthony, for 31 days. Cindy told authorities that she had asked her daughter if she could see Caylee multiple times over the month, but Casey said she was too busy with a work assignment to arrange for them to meet. During that same phone call, Casey confirmed to police that Caylee had been missing since June 15. Casey said she dropped Caylee off at a babysitter’s home that day, and when she returned later to pick her up, Caylee and the sitter were gone. On July 16, Casey was arrested and charged with child neglect. In trial, Casey’s lawyer, Jose Baez, argued that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family’s swimming pool on June 16, and that George helped cover up her death. The defense also claimed that Casey was sexually abused by her father and brother, and that she “hid her daughter’s death like she hid the secret of her alleged sexual abuse.” In 2011, Casey was found not guilty of murdering Caylee.
