The archbishop of the Enugu ecclesiastical province of the Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma has berated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the release of timetable for the 2019 general elections less than two years into the life of the present administration.
He stated that the action was capable of not just causing tension in the polity but also derailing the programmes of the government. According to the cleric who spoke at the dedication of Nigandi Engineering Ltd Building project in Enugu, it was unheard of that an electoral commission would ambush a government with a timetable for the next election that is about 26 months away, insisting that the action of the INEC was not in the interest of the Nigerian People.
“They are playing pranks; they have inconclusive records and programmes which are too early. The release of the timetable is dangerous because it sets the politicians on a high jump and making the polity to be heated up; it’s not right, it’s too early, it sends a bad signal and I totally condemn it. It is going to cause high tension and make politicians to begin the act of politicking instead of delivering good governance, it’s too early, it should be reversed and they should be called to order,” he stressed.
Chukwuma urged the commission to use the period to put its house in order by engaging in voter education and other activities that would encourage citizens’ participation in the electoral process instead of coming up with timetable for election, adding, “are they telling us that by the time the elections come, there will nothing like inconclusiveness again.”
