At least 145 workers were fired on Friday at one of Nigeria’s most promising television stations, the Board of Continental Broadcasting Services Ltd. (CBS), owners of Television Continental (TVC) and Radio Continental, confirmed in a statement.
The television and radio stations are owned by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos and an ally of President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the godfather of the current Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
Rumours had been swirling in recent days that the broadcast company was about to send hundreds of people into the employment market. On Friday morning, what was feared by hard working staff became an ugly reality.
“In line with these changes we are reconfiguring our workforce as part of the rationale to achieve our objectives. 145 people will be affected by today’s announcement,” said a statement by Regina Whenu, Associate Consultant, Brooks + Blake.
