Derrick Rose is headed to the Cavs to team up with LeBron James
Derrick Rose is heading to Cleveland to play alongside LeBron James. The Vertical’s Shams Charania reported Rose has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cavs.
This is an even more interesting signing given news broke late last week that Kyrie Irving has requested a trade. If Irving does get traded this off-season, Rose would slide into the starting role. Charania notes both options are on the table.
“Rose and the Cavaliers have discussed parameters for Rose to play as a starter and reserve, but the three-time NBA All-Star has focused on filling whichever role the franchise requires,” Charania writes.
For now, Irving is in the starting lineup with Rose serving the role of sixth man. Here’s a look at the updated roster after the Rose signing.

If Irving does end up staying in Cleveland next season, it will be interesting to see how Ty Lue divides the minutes. Rose has had trouble staying healthy over the last few seasons playing in 64 and 66 games the last two years. A lighter load could help extend Rose for the playoffs now that he is on a contender.
Rose averaged just over 32 minutes a game for the Knicks last season. Additionally, Rose averaged 18 points, 4.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds.
Given Rose signed for the veteran minimum, it is unlikely this move is a signal one or the other in regards to Irving’s future. ESPN reported Irving’s trade demands are related to his desire to be the main player on a team. The cloud of uncertainty around James’ future also likely does not help things.
It has been an off-season full of dysfunction in Cleveland. In addition to the James’ rumors and Irving’s trade requests, there has been turnover in the front office with former GM David Griffin not being retained. The worst part for Cavs fans is there is still over two months remaining in the off-season.
