The former Governor of Cross River State Donald Duke and the
founder of Zenith Bank Plc. Jim Ovia are of the opinion that
infrastructural development cannot be limited to political
circles.
At the plenary session of the ongoing Annual General Conference of
the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos, on a sub theme
“De-risking infrastructure”, Jim Ovia, Donald Duke and other
panelist analyzed the problems with infrastructural development in
Nigeria.
They agreed that “we must change our attitudes and perceptions
towards our nation. Government is arrogant in its dealings with
citizens.”
Speaking further they added that “the Government believes they
are doing citizens a favour when it comes to providing necessary
infrastructure.
It was noted that the government must not only have a public
sector mindset but must think like the private sector as well”
The representative from General Electric noted that “the private
sector needs to intervene and engage government in partnership to
develop Its infrastructure which will create more jobs and wealth
for it’s citizens”
According to them “Infrastructural development cannot be limited
to political circles. Long term projects are paid for by pension
funds etc. Nigeria cannot based their budget for funding using
dollars or euro benchmarks. Local currency must be used to fund
projects and we must use local materials”
