An Abuja-based lawyer, Oluchukwu Nnamuah, has filed a
fundamental rights enforcement suit before the Federal High Court
in Abuja, seeking to restrain the Chief of Defence Intelligence
from ejecting him from his law office at Suit 5, Mammy Market,
Lungi Barracks Shopping Complex, Maitama, Abuja.
Nnamuah, who said he had been occupying the office space for
over 15 years, claimed that the Chief of Defence Intelligence was
threatening to eject him for choosing to represent one Mrs. Stella
Nzubechukwu, who sued the army for alleged illegal detention.
He claimed that at about 11am on January 24, 2018, one Maj.
Bent, a Brigade of Guards, in company with some military officers
stormed his office and gave him one hour and later 24 hours to
vacate the office or he would be thrown out.
“When I sought to know the offence my office and I had
committed, I was simply informed by one of the military officers
that the instruction was as a result of acting as solicitors for
one Mrs. Stella Nzubechukwu, when she and her two-month-old baby
were unlawfully and unconstitutionally detained in the custody of
the 2nd and 3rd defendants for about 11 days without being charged
or tried before a competent court of law,” Nnamuah said.
The lawyer, who claimed to have conducted himself peacefully all
through the 15 years he had been in the office space, contended
that there was no justification for the military to eject him.
