* Be more creative, Egbemode charges media outfit
Ahead of 2019 general elections, constitutional lawyer, Prof.
Ben Nwabueze and former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN), Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, have called on Nigerians to take
active part in 2019 general elections by electing credible people
into public offices. Speaking yesterday during The Niche 4th
anniversary lecture in Lagos, with “Development Reporting and
Hysteria Journalism in Nigeria,” as theme of the anniversary,
Nwabueze and Moghalu said the 2019 general elections are very
crucial to the survival of Nigeria. Also speaking at the event, the
President of Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and Managing
Director/Editorin- Chief of New Telegraph Newspaper, Mrs. Funke
Egbemode, stressed the need for media practitioners to be more
creative in addressing the challenges facing the media industry in
order for them to remain in business. Nwabueze said the 2019
general elections are very crucial to Nigeria because the elections
will decide whether the country can remain as one or break up.
“We must all get our voters card and vote during the 2019
general elections. We must participate in the election because it
will decide whether the country can stay or break up. This is the
opportunity we have and we must make good use of it to elect
credible leaders. We must come out and vote in 2019. Let us all
come out and vote,” he said. Moghalu said Nigerians must speak with
one voice during next year’s general elections and stop recycling
of old politicians in public office, adding that all old people in
government must be sent to retirement in 2019. Moghalu, who has
declared interest in the 2019 presidential election, said the only
way journalism in Nigeria would play a developmental role is when
Nigerians have a new elite led by a worldview that is focused on
ensuring that Nigeria can fulfill its potential.
“We need to be led by leaders who can unite us. Today, we have
recycle politicians who doesn’t have best plan for Nigeria. We have
leaders without world view and that is why the country is not
progressing as expected. For Nigeria to be great, people should use
their voter cards to put in place right government. “We must not be
silence and that is why some of us are coming out to contest in
2019. We need leadership with the world view because the greatest
countries are driven by world view.
There is no reason why Nigeria cannot become great again. We
must speak with one voice in 2019 elections and send the old people
to retirement,” he said. On her part, Egbemode, while speaking on
the inability of some media organisations to pay salaries as and
when due and the likelihood of some Mass Communication graduates
not getting employment due to challenges in the media industry,
which has made some media organisations to close shop, advised
tertiary institutions to consider reducing the number of intakes
for Mass Communication programmes. Also speaking, Lagos State All
Progressives Congress (APC) Publicity Secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe
and former Deputy Managing Director of Access Bank, Obinna Nwosu,
called on Nigerians to contribute their quota to the growth and
development of the country. Igbokwe said there are champions in
every ethnic group in Nigeria, noting that everybody is important
in the country and therefore urged people to stop looking down at
those who doesn’t belong to their ethnic nationality. Nwosu said
people must rise above personal challenges and make personal
decision that will add individual and collective value to the
society.
He said nothing will change in Nigeria until people start making
the right decisions. Former presidential candidate of Kowa Party in
the 2015 general elections, Prof. Remi Sonaiya, who was the
chairperson of the event, described one of the Dapchi girls, Leah
Sharibu, the Christian girl, who refused to convert to Islam and
presently with Boko Haram members, as a courageous girl who
deserved respect for standing up against the terrorists. Speaking
on the 2019 general elections, Sonaiya urged the media not to
portray the race like it did in 2015 by portraying the candidates
of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress
(APC), as only runners in the presidential race
