President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen
pleaded guilty Thursday to lying to Congress about a real estate
project in Russia, as part of a deal with special counsel Robert
Mueller in the probe of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S.
presidential election.
Cohen made a surprise court appearance at federal court in
Manhattan on Thursday morning, where he admitted to making the
false statements.
In August, Cohen pleaded guilty in a separate federal case to
eight criminal counts in the Southern District of New York related
to tax fraud, excessive campaign contributions and making false
statements to a financial institution.
Two of those charges related to his prior work for Trump, when
he said that he made payments to women in 2016 at the direction of
a political candidate running for office. Cohen’s attorney, Lanny
Davis, later tied it directly to Trump.
Neither the special counsel’s office nor Davis immediately
responded to CNBC’s requests for comment.
The development in Cohen’s legal saga came shortly after Trump
sent multiple tweets raging against the Russia investigation.
So much happening with the now discredited
Witch Hunt. This total Hoax will be studied for years!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November

Did you ever see an investigation more in
search of a crime? At the same time Mueller and the Angry Democrats
aren’t even looking at the atrocious, and perhaps subversive,
crimes that were committed by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the
Democrats. A total disgrace!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November

When will this illegal Joseph McCarthy style
Witch Hunt, one that has shattered so many innocent lives, ever
end-or will it just go on forever? After wasting more than
$40,000,000 (is that possible?), it has proven only one thing-there
was NO Collusion with Russia. So Ridiculous!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November
