Prison Wardens Beat Up Lawyer For Refusing To Pay Them For The Release Of A Client

A Lawyer by the name, Amosu Sunday, of NBA Badagry branch, has
been reportedly beaten up by some wardens from the Nigerian Prison
Service at Badagry.

The news was made available to TNL by one Dr. Agidi. According
to the information disclosed, Mr. Sunday was assaulted by the
officers after he refused to pay them money for the release of a
client who was granted bail.

“I was reliably informed that Amosu Sunday, a lawyer and member
of Badagry Branch was assaulted and harmed by members of the
Nigerian Prison Service at Badagry today. Sunday Amosu visited the
prison to facility the release of a defendant released on bail by
Court 3, Lagos State Magistrate Court, Badagry.

“The prison warden demanded for money before he could effect the
release of the defendant and the lawyer turned down the demand and
asked to speak to a superior officer. After meeting with the
officer, on his way out he was attacked by the warden who was
joined in the assault by other wardens. Relations of the defendant
who were with the lawyer at the time corroborated the story.

“After hearing the story, I advised the lawyer to report the
incident to the nearest police station. I called the Badagry Branch
Chairman to inform him. This is rascally and brutish and should not
be condoned, more so when it is coming barely a couple of weeks
after the Executive Committee has visited the prison authority to
facilitate good relationship between the Bar and the Prison
Authority and nurture easy assess to justice by inmates.

“Corruption in the prison service has been a
llong-standingissue. We must rise to fight not only the assualt on
one of us but also the corruption of prison wardens.” Dr. Agidi
