The Nigeria Bar Association has promised to investigate the
incident of assault involving a lawyer and a female official of the
Federal Road Safety Commission. This was contained in a press
statement released by the National Publicity Secretary of the NBA,
Mr. Kunle Edun.
In the statement titled, “NBA SPEAKS ON LAWYER’ S BRAWL
WITH FRSC OFFICIALS”, the NBA said that it will not
tolerate any act of thuggery by any legal practitioner. However,
being that the NBA does not know the whole details of the incident
that led to the assault, Mr. Edun. therefore, ask members of the
legal community to furnish them with relevant information that will
help them come to a logical conclusion over the matter.
“The attention of the National Officers of the Nigerian Bar
Association have been drawn to a video clip which has now gone
viral involving a ‘lawyer’ and some Federal Road Safety Corp
officials. The video clip appeared to show the ‘lawyer’ assaulting
a female FRSC official and behaving in a way unexpected of a legal
practitioner.
“While we are still in the process of obtaining the particulars
of the ‘lawyer’ involved and his branch, we assure members that the
NBA would not tolerate a situation where legal practitioners
exhibit acts of thuggery and gross indiscipline in the conduct of
their affairs, and bring the legal profession into disrepute.
Proper investigation shall be conducted and members shall be
informed accordingly of the outcome of the investigation. However,
you may private chat me if you have any useful information
regarding the incident,” the statement reads.
In response, Chairman of the Aguata Branch of the NBA, Associate
Professor C. J. Ubanyionwu, has disclosed the identity of the
lawyer who was said to have been involved in the unfortunate clash.
Inputting statement on the supposed good character of one D. U.
Umeobika Esq., the lawyer said to be involved in the ordeal, C. J.
Ubanyionwu noted that that this is not the first time such issue
has been recorded.
According to him, the FRSC has been known to be notorious for
such acts as himself has been a victim in this regard. He
therefore, charges the National Publicity Secretary to retract his
earlier publication as he believes same to be done in error.
“It is most unfortunate for the publicity secretary of NBA to
have spoken on this issue without ascertaining the true position of
what transpired between FRSC officials and a member of my branch,
D. U. Umeobika Esq.
“During the emergency meeting of the leaders of NBA Aguata
Branch last night 15th Dec, at the Bar Centre over this issue, we
thanked God that it was D.U. Umeobika that was involved, a
gentleman of impeccable integrity called to the bar in 1987. I am
giving you an assignment now, Publicity Secretary. Call any judge
or senior members of the Bar in Anambra State to ascertain the
personality of Umeobika. We cried last night after he narrated his
ordeal in the hands of FRSC officials. That Video you watched did
not show when they were beating him inside the vehicle and were
threatening him to come down from the vehicle.
“I have been a victim of FRSC official’s molestation and
intimidation on several occasions. My juniors too. NBA Aguata
Branch has assembled some lawyers to take up Umeobika’s case with
FRSC. Publicity Secretary, sir, please kindly retract this
publication having done same in error,” he said.
