The Akwa Ibom State Government, on Wednesday, announced the ban
on the use of sirens by unauthorised persons in the state and
directed law enforcement agents to apprehend defaulters.
The decision was taken during an emergency state executive
council meeting held at the Government House, Uyo.
The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Udoh, who
stated this while briefing journalists after the meeting presided
over by Governor Udom Emmanuel, said the move was to bring sanity
and forestall the wrong usage of sirens.
He said the law authorised only governors, their deputies,
speakers of state Houses of Assembly and fire fighting vehicles,
ambulances and trucks on emergencies to use sirens.
Udoh explained, “The council frowns on the indiscriminate use of
sirens by people in the state; the law prescribes that only three
people are permitted to use sirens; these persons are the governor,
deputy governor and the speaker of the state House of Assembly as
well as fire fighting trucks on emergency assignments.
“Every other person, who uses sirens in the state is doing so
illegally and the council has also mandated the security agencies
to apprehend anyone, who violates this order and bring them to
book; the idea is that we need to have a sane society; we need to
have a society where there is law and order; we need to have a
society where status is respected.”
He added that the council also deliberated on the forthcoming
32nd anniversary of the creation of the state and decided that it
would be low-keyed.
The commissioner said the anniversary would feature the
inauguration of the digital power substation in Ekim, Kings Flour
Mill, plywood factory, the renovated Immanuel Hospital in Eket, the
General Hospital in the Awa-Onna Local Government Area and some
road projects by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.
