Ahmadu Bello University has today, 8th of October, been declared
the winner of the first National Copyrights Moot Competition which
held at the Customary Court of Appeal, Abuja on the 19th day of
August, 2019. The result was announced by Senator Iyere Ihenyen,
Chairperson of the National Copyright Moot Competition; Lead
Partner, Infusion Lawyers;
The participant Universities were: Obafemi Awolowo University;
University of Abuja; University of Ilorin; Ahmadu Bello University;
University of Ibadan and University of Benin
ABU came first while University of Ilorin and Obafemi Awolowo
University came second and third respectively. ABU was represented
by a team of three led by Ayua Jude Terna, SAA (Senior Advocate of
ABU). The others were Chiroma Karaga Madu (Class rep, IPL Class of
2018, ABU) and Mubarak Mubarak Bala, JCA (ABU SRC, 2018 as he

Amongst other activities such as a book launch and publication
of copyright
reports, the Competition was organized to celebrate the
appointment of Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja as the Chairman of the
Governing Board of the NCC,
coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the NCC.
In a brief commentary, Chairperson, Senator Ihenyen said the
participating counsel from each institution performed
brilliantly.
“Indeed, the members of the audience witnessed the oral
advocacy of each counsel as they fought their clients’ cause before
the moot court. Considering that the facts of the brief bordered on
a novel area of intellectual property law—copyright &
articificial intelligence—performances by counsel are most
commendable. Hopefully, the Competition has not only succeeded in
stimulating the intellectual appetite of the participating
institutions but also gets to challenge our institutions to review
the intellectual property curriculum in the light of emerging
technologies. Our policy makers and lawmakers must also review our
intellectual property policies and laws to ensuring that Nigeria is
on the map in today’s IP-driven competitive global
economy.”
This is the fourth trophy of National Moot Court Competition won
by ABU within this year. It earlier won that of LAWSAN, CLASFON,
NAMLAS and that of LAWSAN.
