The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano will tomorrow play
host to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu at the
inauguration of Closed-Circuit Cameras (CCTVs) acquired by the
state government to be installed in three cities of the state
namely: Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi.
Known as Smart City Project, the CCTV cameras will later be
extended to other communities of the state.
A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and
Public Enlightenment Mr. C. Don Adinuba described the gadgets as
modern, procured by the governor in continuation of his fight
against crime.
The ceremony will also mark a second phase of the state war
against crime code-named ‘Operation Kpochapu’ which translates to
“Operation Wipe Out Crime.
According to Adinuba “The Smart City Security Project was
inspired by the governor’s visit to Massachusetts, United States,
in October, 2018, when he toured places like the Cambridge
Innovation Centre, Boston University and Industrial Video and
Control in Boston.
” He was struck by, among other things, the sophisticated
surveillance cameras from Industrial Video and Control, developed
in conjunction with researchers at the Cambridge Innovation Centre
and other research centres in Massachusetts.
During the ceremony, 109 vehicles which have been procured and
equipped with state of the art electronic devices to work in unison
with the super smart gadgets will also be launched.
Adinuba said that already a select police officers have been
trained to man the 49 pickups manufactured by Innoson Manufacturing
Company in the fleet.
The pickup vehicles will operate with the sophisticated CCTVs
and the equipment in the new vehicles, he said.
These equipment were procured, Adinuba said, because the state
government needs to use advanced technology to provide security to
the people and in return boost the economies tremendously.
