We’ll probe alleged killings, electoral violence, says INEC – TheNigerialawyer

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday
promised to do justice to the petition filed by a former chairman,
Senate Committee of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Dino
Melaye, in which he protested against alleged malpractices in the
Kogi West Senatorial election.

Melaye, who stormed INEC headquarters in Abuja with what he
described “documentary evidence that there was no election in the
length and breadth of Kogi West,” demanded cancellation of the
election.

He was received by INEC Secretary, Rose Orianran-Anthony and the
National Commissioner/Chairman of its Information and Voter
Education Committee, Festus Okoye.

Okoye said the commission would look into the petition, “study
it and then we will get back to him in terms of our response.”

Okoye said, “I have the mandate of the chairman to receive your
petition; the chairman and the national commissioners will look at
your petition and we assure you that we are going to continue to do
justice in all circumstance.”

Melaye said his determination to retrieve his alleged stolen
mandate “is a battle of no retreat, no surrender.”

He said, “I have petitioned the INEC national chairman and
National Commissioner in charge of Kogi, Kwara and Nasarawa states
over the conduct of the governorship and Kogi West Senatorial
elections held on November 16. I am here with my petition and 21
video CDs as documentary evidence that there was no election in the
length and breadth of Kogi West.”

The petition by Melaye dated November 18, 2019, was titled, ‘A
call for cancellation of the election for Kogi West Senatorial
District held on November 16 2019 in certain areas.’ It was filed
by his lawyer, Tobechukwu Nweke.
