As the story goes, the Reds are interested but RB Leipzig won’t
be selling Dayot Upamecano mid-season.
Liverpool have injury issues at centre half. Just in case you
hadn’t noticed. Increasingly, though, it appears the club are set
to stick with a makeshift backline until the offseason. However,
that doesn’t mean they won’t have considered their options.
Options like Dayot Upamecano, RB Leipzig’s rising star
22-year-old, who The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano says clubs
including Liverpool have been enquiring about—only to be told that
there’s no way Leipzig will sell the young Frenchman
mid-season.
Once the season ends, though, it will be open season on
Upamecano, with the player having a €42M—or about £37M—that kicks
in this summer. Liverpool, along with Chelsea, Manchester
United, and Bayern

If the Reds are confident in landing him, Upamecano does seem
the type of talent worth waiting for, and given his importance to
Leipzig it’s easy to understand why that club would choose to hold
on to him even if they might get more to sell in January.
Still, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez sidelined—likely for
the season—and Joël Matip unable to stay fit, it’s hard to see a
realistic path to silverware in the league and Champions League for the Reds without defensive
reinforcements this month.
