The Nigeria Police Force says the open threat issued by a suspect against an investigating officer in a viral video underscores the need to overhaul the country’s criminal justice system.
Reacting to the chilling video on Thursday, Police Spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi noted that such incidents are all too common for security agents. He said the threat should serve as an “eye-opener” for stakeholders to address lingering defects impeding the dispensation of justice.
While admitting his inability to ascertain the particular offence leading to the arrest, Adejobi explained that punishment depends on what the law stipulates for specific crimes. He dismissed notions that the police free suspects arbitrarily, noting that offenses have constitutional penalties.
The Police PRO stressed that where granted bail or serving jail terms, threatening suspects often return to intimidate or harm officers. He called for more protection and support to guarantee the safety of personnel carrying out law enforcement duties.
ACP Adejobi urged a collective effort by all actors in the multi-agency justice system to close existing gaps being exploited by criminals. The police and other agencies deserve a better working environment to effectively deliver their mandates, he added.
The video has sparked reactions about glaring inadequacies in Nigeria’s criminal administration process requiring urgent redress before things spiral out of control.
