*Mobilises N50m Ransom For Father Of Abuja Kidnapped Girls
Former Minister of Communications, Prof. Isa Pantami, has expressed frustration over the lack of utilization of the National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM synchronization policy, despite risks to his life.
In a social media post on Sunday, Pantami revealed facing death threats from criminals for championing the NIN-SIM policy aimed at tackling insecurity. However, relevant security agencies have failed to effectively deploy the identification system in operations.
The former minister’s comments came after he donated ransom money to secure the release of 5 girls kidnapped in Abuja last week. The abductors had murdered one of the sisters, sparking public outrage.
“Lack of utilizing NIN-SIM is the main problem, not the policy itself,” Pantami stated. According to him, the policy has aided security operations in the past when deployed.
Pantami sacrificed his safety to implement the NIN-SIM guidelines as Communications Minister. Still, the ongoing neglect leaves him more worried than anyone else. He expressed frustration that his efforts seem wasted if the policy does not get used to combat crimes like kidnapping.
While reiterating that paying ransoms encourages criminals, Pantami said the murdered girl’s case prompted his donation to save her surviving sisters. He thanked donors supporting the families and prayed for the girls’ rescue.
The NIN-SIM policy, launched in 2020, requires mobile users to link SIMs to National Identification Numbers. The government touts it as crucial for national security.
