Elder statesman and ex-Commonwealth scribe, Chief Emeka Anyaoku has asserted Nigeria’s prevailing constitution is inadequate to tackle endemic poverty, insecurity and infrastructure decay plaguing the nation.
Speaking to journalists yesterday in his home town of Obosi, Anambra State, Anyaoku argued the current crises require deeper constitutional reforms implemented by the country’s founding leaders when crafting the 1960 independence charter.
He emphasized only returning power structures agreed by Nigeria’s diverse groups can effectively address the widespread socio-economic ills and sectional tensions threatening national unity.
Anyaoku also commented on the recurring IPOB-inspired sit-at-home protests paralyzing South East economic activities every Monday. While understanding the agitations, he insists prolonging the industrial action damages regional trade and should stop.
The respected diplomat instead advised the federal government to address the root grievance – continued incarceration of Biafran separatist Nnamdi Kanu against court orders. Resolving his case could persuade sympathizers to end the weekly economic lockdown, Anyaoku submitted.
The elder statesman offered these perspectives on reforming Nigeria’s defective constitutional order while attending the Ito-Ogoto age-grade festival in his Anambra community celebrating octogenarians for their wisdom.
