Former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chidi Odinkalu, has issued a stern warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the ongoing Edo governorship election.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Odinkalu emphasized the strategic importance of Edo state and cautioned that any disruption in the election process could have severe repercussions for the entire country.
“If Mahmood Yakubu & @inecnigeria mess with #EdoDecides2024, all of #Nigeria will suffer it: there is hardly anywhere you can go in Nigeria without passing through Edo,” Odinkalu wrote in his tweet.
The former NHRC chairman’s warning comes amidst heightened tensions surrounding the Edo governorship election, which has been closely watched by political observers and stakeholders across the nation. Edo state, located in the South-South region of Nigeria, is known for its strategic position and significant influence on the country’s political landscape.
Odinkalu’s concerns about potential mishandling of the election by INEC and its chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, have been met with mixed reactions. On September 14, Odinkalu faced criticism from Kamson Chidubem, convener of the Civic Integrity Initiative (CII), who accused him of “biased criticisms and media abuses.”
Despite the criticism, Odinkalu remains steadfast in his call for INEC to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election process in Edo state. The former NHRC chairman’s warning serves as a reminder of the high stakes involved in the Edo governorship election and the potential consequences of any irregularities or disruptions.
