Former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recently concluded Edo State governorship election, labeling it a “blatant example of ‘state capture’” and a “continued gross undermining of our democratic process and values.” In a statement released on his official Twitter account, Obi expressed his disappointment with the election, which took place over the weekend.
Obi argued that the election did not represent the democratic process that Nigerians have chosen as a method of electing their political leadership. He warned that any nation whose leadership recruitment process is so fatally flawed is doomed, and the effects are already being felt in the country.
The former Anambra State governor urged those in authority not to allow the situation to stand or depend on it to remain in power. He highlighted the significant investment made in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) IReV and BVAS systems, insisting that they must be allowed to function properly to free the electoral process from the massive falsification that has plagued it and is worsening.
Obi also had strong words for the agencies and individuals being used to undermine democracy simply because they hold positions of authority. He reminded them that their time in office is not eternal and that the society they are helping to destroy today will eventually take its revenge on them tomorrow.
Furthermore, Obi called out lecturers and others complicit in perpetuating this charade, urging them to reflect deeply on the roles they are playing in damaging the very foundation of democracy. He warned that the damage they are causing today will inevitably take revenge on them tomorrow and affect their children in the future.
Obi maintained that this kind of action has no place in a true democracy and reiterated his stance that today’s politics is not about capturing power but about saving the country and making it work for everyone, regardless of their background. He reaffirmed his commitment to building a new and truly democratic Nigeria, which he insists is very possible.
The Edo State governorship election has been marred by allegations of irregularities and manipulation, with various groups, including election observers, calling for a thorough investigation into the process.
