In a ruling on Monday, Chief Judge Abiodun Adebara of Kwara State directed that all public protests in the state must be confined to the Metropolitan Square in Ilorin.
The decision was made in response to an ex-parte motion filed by the Kwara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, citing concerns over public order and safety.
The interim injunction, effective October 1, 2024, prohibits unknown persons and their agents from holding any public protests, rallies, processions, or meetings in any location other than the designated Metropolitan Square on Asa Dam Road. The court has also instructed the State Security Service, the Commissioner of Police, and the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps to provide adequate security to protect lives, property, and public infrastructure during any planned protests or gatherings.
To ensure that the respondents are aware of the ruling, the court has ordered that court processes be served on them by substituted service, which will be posted at the High Court of Justice premises in Ilorin. The interim injunction will remain in force for at least seven days, with the next hearing scheduled for October 21, 2024.
This decision by the Chief Judge aims to maintain public order and ensure the safety of citizens during any planned protests or gatherings in Kwara State.
