The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has once again assured that it will investigate the allegations of funds embezzlement leveled against former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle. This marks the fourth time the anti-graft agency has made such a commitment.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale made this statement while addressing protesters who had gathered at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja to demand a probe into Matawalle, who currently serves as the Minister of State for Defence. Oyewale assured the protesters, who were members of the APC Akida Forum, that their demands would be relayed to the EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
The protesters questioned the EFCC’s inaction on Matawalle’s case, citing the commission’s recent investigations into former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and the arrest of former Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku over alleged corruption.
In May 2023, less than two weeks before Matawalle’s tenure as governor ended, the EFCC announced that it was investigating him over the alleged diversion of N70 billion from the Zamfara State Government’s treasury. However, the matter seemed to have gone cold after Matawalle emerged as a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
Recent accusations by Matawalle’s successor, Governor Dauda Lawal, who alleged that the former governor sponsored bandits and engaged in a series of corrupt activities, have brought the issue back into the public eye. Matawalle has denied these allegations.
As the EFCC reiterates its commitment to investigate Matawalle’s case for the fourth time, the public awaits the outcome of the probe and the commission’s actions in addressing the allegations of corruption.
