The Nigerian Super Eagles found themselves in a challenging situation upon their arrival in Libya for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Players and officials were left stranded at the Al Abaq Airport for over four hours due to unforeseen changes in their travel arrangements.
According to journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had initially secured an agreement for the chartered flight to land in Benghazi, a location conveniently close to Benina, the intended destination. However, mid-flight, the plane was unexpectedly diverted to Abraq Airport, nearly a three-hour drive from Benina.
Despite the diversion, the Libyan Football Association failed to provide any transportation for the Super Eagles contingent at Abraq Airport. The team found themselves locked up and stranded for more than three hours. The NFF attempted to make alternative transport arrangements, but the airport authorities refused to open the gates.
Super Eagles defender Tanimu Benjamin took to Twitter to express his frustration, stating, “4hrs after arrival, still at the airport. Also still have 2hrs drive to the hotel.”
The team is scheduled to face Libya on Tuesday in the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Super Eagles currently hold an advantage, having secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg played in Uyo.
As of the time of reporting, the Super Eagles remain stranded at the Abraq Airport, awaiting resolution to their transport predicament. The NFF is working to ensure the team’s safe and timely arrival at their hotel in Benina.
