The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State Branch, held its Triennial General Meeting on Monday, December 9, 2024, marking the end of Mrs. Adata Bio-Briggs’ tenure as Chairperson.
The meeting, which took place at the FIDA Rivers State office, also saw the election of new executives to lead the branch for the next three years.
During her three-year tenure, which began in December 2021, Mrs. Adata Bio-Briggs, alongside her team, including Emi Jim-George as Vice Chairperson and Irene Pepple as Secretary, made significant strides in promoting the rights of women and children in Rivers State. The administration conducted 73 sensitization outreaches, visited 23 Local Government Areas, and provided numerous pro bono services to safeguard abused women and children in the state. Their efforts focused on creating awareness about the Child Rights Law and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.
The general election, which was a key part of the meeting, saw the emergence of a new set of executives to carry on the branch’s mission. Emi Jim-George was elected as the new Chairperson, while Okorite Wobo secured the position of Secretary with 25 votes, defeating Ibiwari Harry, who received 15 votes. Other elected executives include Tosan Jaja as Welfare Secretary, Concilia Enwereuzoh as Treasurer, Oluchi Ofoegbu as Financial Secretary, Rachel Princewill as Publicity Secretary, and Sotonye Kelechi-Nwuzi as Assistant Publicity Secretary.
However, the positions of Vice Chairperson and Assistant Secretary remain vacant, as the members who indicated interest in contesting for these positions were disqualified for not meeting the electoral guidelines.
In her acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairperson, Emi Jim-George, promised to build upon the achievements of the previous administration and elevate FIDA Nigeria, Rivers State Branch, to new heights. Rachel Princewill, the new Publicity Secretary, also pledged to keep the public well-informed about the branch’s activities and maintain FIDA’s strong presence in the state.
