Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu directed them to reinstate former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, describing the report as baseless and suggesting that the former speaker may be “daydreaming.”
The denial comes in response to a report by an online news platform alleging that President Tinubu had ordered lawmakers to pave the way for Obasa’s return as Speaker. The report claimed that the political cost of Obasa’s removal could outweigh the benefits of holding him accountable for alleged corruption and abuse of office.
According to the report, a senior Lagos politician who participated in recent meetings disclosed that the president had instructed lawmakers to prepare for Obasa’s return, stating, “The president said Obasa will spend only a short time before resigning on his terms.” The source added that the decision was aimed at providing Obasa with a “soft landing” to avoid serious political repercussions.
However, lawmakers have vehemently denied the claims, with some expressing concerns about the potential consequences of Obasa’s reinstatement. One lawmaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, likened the situation to “trying to pacify a snake after its head was severed,” warning that the fallout could be severe.
Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, a representative of the assembly, stated in a WhatsApp message, “I don’t understand. I’m not aware.” He emphasized that Obasa has not been suspended and would return to the assembly as an ordinary member if he chooses to do so.
Another source close to the assembly told THISDAY that the report was a fabrication orchestrated by Obasa and his camp to disrupt the peace of the assembly and the state. The source clarified that President Tinubu had no involvement in the matter and had previously advised Obasa that he had “done enough” after nearly a decade as Speaker.
“The report is not only false but a story planted and circulated by Obasa and his camp to create confusion,” the source said. “The president understands that such an order, no matter how angry he is over Obasa’s removal, would greatly harm his democratic credentials, and he would not want to travel that route.”
