Legal practitioner, Aloy Ejimakor, has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of barring him from visiting his client, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who is in their custody.
In a terse statement made available to The Guardian, Ejimakor revealed that his legal team alongside an ex-member of the Abia State House of Assembly and members of Kanu’s family were also prevented by the secret police from visiting the IPOB leader.
“This flagrant violation of the Nigerian Constitution and a subsisting court order will not stand,” he said.
Kanu is being held by the DSS as he faces charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony for trying to revive the defunct Biafra Republic.
He recently asked the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, to recuse herself from the case against him, saying he would rather remain behind bars than stand trial before her.
In an open letter, Kanu stated that his case is deliberately being shielded from judges and justices that are deemed to be committed to doing justice even when it means that the federal government must lose.
“Be that as it may, if it will take the rest of my life in detention to produce me before a proper and impartial court, so be it. But let me say this for the world to know: I will not succumb to any trial conducted by any judge or court whose jurisdiction does not pass constitutional muster. Not now, not ever,” he said.
The DSS was not available for comment on the allegation.
