The Lagos State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the unauthorized entry of suspended Clerk, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, into the Assembly premises following his suspension on January 13 over allegations of financial misappropriation.
The Assembly’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Kabir Kushoro, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.
Onafeko, who was suspended by a two-thirds majority of House members, reportedly arrived at the Assembly complex around 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, accompanied by unknown individuals. According to Kushoro, he blocked the Assembly staff gate with his car and later attempted to force his way into the Clerk’s office.
“This act of defiance constitutes a clear disregard for legislative protocols and security regulations,” Kushoro stated. “The House leadership views this action as an affront to the institution’s integrity and will take all necessary steps to uphold discipline and order.”
The development follows a ruling by the National Industrial Court sitting in Lagos, which on Thursday sacked the acting Clerk, Babatunde Ottun, who had been appointed by Speaker Mojisola Meranda. The court subsequently ordered the reinstatement of Onafeko as the substantive Clerk of the House.
Justice M. N. Esowe, in ruling on suit number NICN/LA/23/2025, issued an ex parte order preventing Babatunde from parading himself as Clerk and directed all parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the case.
Despite the court ruling, the Assembly maintains that Onafeko should focus on the legal process rather than attempting to forcefully resume office.
Kushoro confirmed that relevant authorities had been alerted and that necessary measures were being taken to prevent further security breaches.
