Terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram/ISWAP on Sunday, March 2, abducted Professor Abubakar Eljuma of the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) along with several other passengers on the Damaturu-Biu highway near Kamuya village.
Professor Eljuma, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at NAUB, was reportedly among the leading contenders for the position of Vice-Chancellor of the institution, which is set for a leadership transition soon.
According to security sources, the terrorists intercepted two Golf cars and a Borno Express bus, seizing an unspecified number of passengers. While female passengers were released, male passengers, including Professor Eljuma, remain in captivity.
A security operative, who spoke anonymously, said, “We are requesting your prayers in this holy month of Ramadan for their quick release.”
The incident occurred near Kamuya village, about 10km from Buratai, the hometown of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Tukur Buratai (Rtd.). The area has been a hotspot for terrorist activities, including kidnappings, roadside bombings, and killings for over a decade.
A staff member at NAUB, who requested anonymity, confirmed the abduction, stating that the University Management convened an emergency meeting on Monday to address the situation.
