The Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern warning to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), urging it to desist from interfering in the party’s administration or making decisions on its behalf.
The opposition party also dismissed any speculation about a possible merger with other political platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, made the party’s stance clear in a statement released on Monday in Abuja.
“While the party is not considering a merger, it remains open to collaborations aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections,” Ifoh stated.
His remarks came in response to calls for rebranding efforts, including a possible merger or coalition to reposition the party.
The NLC, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, issued a communique signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, emphasizing the need to reclaim the Labour Party and restore its ideological foundation.
The union directed its National Administrative Council to take immediate steps toward rebranding the party, which could include merging with or forming a coalition with other like-minded political groups to safeguard LP’s interests and those of Nigerian workers.
The rift between the Labour Party and the NLC has deepened following the re-election of Julius Abure as National Chairman of the LP at a convention held in Anambra State. The NLC has refused to recognize Abure’s leadership, further escalating tensions between both entities.
