As speculations grow over high-profile defections to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has predicted that the party will soon face internal conflicts.
The recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP has intensified political discussions ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Many observers anticipate more defections in the coming weeks.
However, speaking on TVC’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, March 12, Bwala dismissed the significance of these moves, arguing that they are part of a calculated strategy to dominate media conversations for two weeks.
“After one or two weeks of this melodrama, you’ll hear that a gladiator has joined the SDP to keep the conversation alive. But when the momentary media coverage ends, they will start fighting over who will be president and vice president.”
Bwala also suggested that El-Rufai joined the SDP because he could not control the structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“The reason El-Rufai did not go to PDP is because he cannot dictate things there, but he said the chairman of SDP is his friend. So they went there because they want to dictate.”
Bwala further claimed that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), will soon leave the party and join the ruling APC.
“Do you know we are emptying the Labour Party? Not because we are asking them to come. Valentine Ozigbo has joined us, Balami has joined us, even Peter Obi will join us,” he asserted.
He linked Obi’s potential defection to the recent move by his close associate, Valentine Ozigbo, to the APC.
“For Valentine Ozigbo to come to our party — and he is actually the custodian of Peter Obi — I know for a fact that Peter Obi will join us.”
Bwala also reiterated that SDP’s ongoing defections are mere media stunts and insisted that internal disagreements will soon arise within the party.
With the 2027 elections still years away, these political realignments continue to shape Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
