Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced that both the Federal and Edo State Governments have established a fact-finding committee to investigate the tragic killing of sixteen traveling hunters on March 27 in Uromi, the headquarters of Esan Northeast Local Government Area of Edo.
The governor made the announcement yesterday at the Government House in Benin during a meeting with a high-level delegation from Kano State, led by Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized that President Bola Tinubu was deeply distressed by the incident and is committed to ensuring the safety of all Nigerians. He stressed the importance of creating secure environments for both residents and businesses across the country.
He stated: “The incident has opened our eyes, and we are ready to address many issues about the country and how to make life better for everyone. President Tinubu is not happy with what happened in Uromi, and he wants us to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
“The President personally wants to see this issue resolved. I also want to inform you that the President and Edo State Government have set up a committee to investigate both the immediate and remote causes of the incident and put forward lasting solutions.”
“This report that you (Gwarzo) have submitted will actually help us so that we do not have to burden you further. Much will be done, and the public will be informed about the committee’s progress.”
“We are peace-loving people in Edo State. We cherish everyone living with us here. Kano and Edo States have a long history of collaboration in commerce and industry.”
In his remarks, Kano Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, praised Governor Okpebholo for his earlier visit to Kano and the peaceful approach he adopted in the aftermath of the Uromi killings.
Gwarzo added, “The Governor of Kano State set up a committee to screen and verify the names, numbers, next of kin, and survivors of the attack. We have completed this task and now have a report, which we are here to submit to Your Excellency.”
“You promised that justice will be done, and we trust you on this, Mr. Governor. We need a transparent process to ensure accountability. Sixteen people from five local government areas of Kano State lost their lives.”
The meeting also included Edo Deputy Governor, Dr. Dennis Idahosa; Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku; security heads from both Edo and Kano states, and senior government officials from both states.
Following the meeting, Governor Okpebholo and the Kano delegation visited Uromi, where they met with members of the Hausa community.
