At least 40 people were killed and many others injured in a midnight attack on Zike community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday.
The attack comes less than two weeks after terrorists killed at least 52 people in the same local government area. Despite repeated promises by the federal government to end the violence and restore peace, killings and reprisals have continued unabated.
A community leader, Wakili Tongwe, told Channels TV that the attackers stormed the village in the early hours of Monday, shooting indiscriminately.
According to Mr. Tongwe, his team of vigilantes and some security personnel were on patrol in another community when the assault began. By the time they returned to repel the attackers, 36 people had already been killed. Four more victims, who sustained severe injuries, later died in the hospital.
Those injured are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful. As of the time of filing this report, he had not responded to calls or text messages.
The violence in Plateau State has a long and tragic history, beginning in 1994—the same year as the Rwandan Genocide that killed hundreds of thousands. The situation worsened following the 2001 ethno-religious crisis between Christians and Muslims in the North-Central state.
A timeline documented by PREMIUM TIMES reveals that nearly 5,000 people have been killed in persistent clashes between different ethnic groups in Plateau. The Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA) has archived incidents of violence from 1994 to 2021, with more recent data gathered from media reports.
Recent unrests, such as the 2023 conflict in Mangu, were fueled by competition over scarce resources between farming and herding communities. The Mangu violence claimed over 300 lives and was followed by the devastating Christmas Eve attack in neighbouring Barkin Ladi LGA, which left at least 150 people dead.
