Ini Ememobong, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, has resigned from Governor Umo Eno’s cabinet following the governor’s official defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Eno formally announced his switch to the APC on Friday after months of speculation and subtle indications of his intention to abandon the PDP. Last month, the governor had issued a directive to members of his cabinet, stating that those unwilling to defect with him should resign their appointments.
“I am told that some of you say you will not come. You are free not to join me, but you won’t be in my state executive council,” Eno reportedly told his appointees.
In a resignation letter dated June 6 and addressed to the governor, Ememobong stated his inability to align with the APC, citing personal convictions.
“You have directed that any appointee who is unwilling to accompany you to switch from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress should resign,” the letter reads.
“Ipso facto, based on my personal conviction, I will be unable to join the All Progressives Congress. I hereby most respectfully tender my resignation as Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port and a member of the State Executive Council.”
Reflecting on his time in office, Ememobong described the experience as “very enlightening” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under Governor Eno’s administration.
In a Facebook post confirming his resignation, Ememobong reiterated that his decision not to defect was rooted in “principles and long-standing opposition” to the APC, while emphasizing that it does not alter his personal relationship with Governor Eno, whom he referred to as a brother.
