At least 96 houses have been razed in Gyenbwas, a community in the Langai District of Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
Residents alleged that the attackers looted food items, mattresses, cattle, and other valuables during the assault.
Alhaji Yakubu Umar, the traditional ruler and Madugun Langai, disclosed the development to Daily Trust on Tuesday in Jos.
According to Umar, in addition to the two persons killed on Monday, one more body was recovered on Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths to three.
The community accused members of the Berom ethnic group of launching the attack—a claim the Berom community has denied.
Umar lamented, “We have never experienced such atrocities. The perpetrators burned working equipment, clothes, foodstuffs, and other valuables. They looted goods worth millions of naira. We live peacefully with everyone, which is why we were so surprised by the attack.”
The traditional ruler called on the Plateau State Government and Mangu LGA authorities to investigate those behind the attack and bring them to justice. He also urged the state to provide relief materials to residents who lost their homes and properties.
In response, the leadership of the Berom Youth Moulders (BYM) Association denied the allegations, describing them as false.
Dalyop Solomon, President of BYM, said, “Yesterday, three of our members who were farming near the area were attacked by terrorists. They are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. All we know is that our people are under attack. The Fulani are only making excuses to justify their own acts of terror.
“They should also understand that when they attack our people, we have the right to defend ourselves. In the process of self-defense, outcomes may vary. Someone who is being targeted has the legal right to defend their life, family, and property. It is possible that, in self-defense, people pursue attackers to their hideouts. But we have never carried out any offensive attacks against the Fulani.”
