Two sisters were involved in a dramatic altercation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Sunday, after reportedly missing their domestic flight.
According to the Spokesperson of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, the incident was “the strangest thing” he had ever witnessed.
The siblings, aged 31 and 23, were booked on an NG Eagle flight but allegedly arrived late and missed their scheduled departure.
“Perhaps one of them blamed her sibling for their missing flight (not sure), but these two siblings began to fight each other,” Achimugu wrote in an X post.
“They scattered luggage and other items before being dragged to the interrogation office by airport security.”
He added that the confrontation continued even after security personnel intervened. The elder sister reportedly fainted during the scuffle, prompting officials to call for an ambulance.
However, Achimugu said the younger sister refused medical evacuation, insisting that her sibling’s collapse was “spiritual” rather than medical.
Despite her objections, the unconscious sister was later taken to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) clinic for treatment.
“On arrival at the FAAN clinic, the sister who fainted earlier began to fight with her younger sibling again. They were both brought back to the crime office for resolution, but the fierce fighting continued,” the NCAA spokesperson added.
Both women were eventually handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for further action.
Similar incidents have occurred in the past at Nigerian airports. In August 2024, a female traveller allegedly destroyed her husband’s international passport at the Lagos airport in protest of years of domestic oppression.
Two months ago, a confrontation broke out at the Abuja airport involving veteran Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM1, and airport officials. Days later, a passenger identified as Comfort Emmanson was also involved in a rage incident aboard an Ibom Air flight at the Lagos airport.
