In a significant move towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and eliminating avoidable blindness, the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) has announced its readiness to partner with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and Social Welfare, alongside the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB). This strategic collaboration aims to bring comprehensive and affordable ophthalmic (eye) care services directly to the residents of Rivers State, with a special focus on underserved rural communities.
Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Secretary of RIVCHPP, Dr. Vetty Agala, emphasized that vision care is a fundamental component of general well-being that is often overlooked due to financial and geographical barriers. By establishing this tripartite alliance, RIVCHPP seeks to leverage the federal resources of the FMOH and the grassroots network of the RSPHCMB to integrate eye care into the state’s existing contributory health schemes.
Bridging the Gap in Rural Eye Care
For many residents in the rural corridors of Rivers State, accessing specialized eye care services usually requires traveling long distances to urban centers, a journey that is often cost-prohibitive. This partnership is designed to decentralize these services. By utilizing the extensive network of primary healthcare centers managed by the RSPHCMB, the initiative will ensure that basic eye screenings, corrective lenses, and early detection of conditions like glaucoma and cataracts are available at the community level.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will provide technical support, policy guidance, and specialized ophthalmic resources to ensure that the services rendered meet national and global standards. This synergy aligns perfectly with the health agenda of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration, which prioritizes accessible, qualitative, and affordable healthcare for all citizens of Rivers State.
A Collaborative Path to Universal Health Coverage
Dr. Agala reiterated that RIVCHPP is committed to removing financial barriers to healthcare. Through the contributory health scheme, registered beneficiaries will be able to access these vital ophthalmic services without facing catastrophic out-of-pocket expenditures. The partnership also plans to roll out massive community outreach programs, sensitization campaigns on eye health, and free surgical camps for cataract patients.
This initiative represents a landmark step in rural healthcare delivery, promising a future where no Rivers citizen loses their sight to preventable or treatable eye conditions due to poverty.
