The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has charged its staff to go beyond routine official duties by embracing professionalism, accountability, empathy, and timely service delivery in their interactions with voters and other stakeholders.

The Commission made the call during its 2026 Customer Service Week celebration held at its Conference Hall in Abuja under the theme, “Going the Extra Mile.”

The event brought together members of the Commission’s management, National Commissioners, directors, heads of departments, staff, and representatives of the Presidency’s Service Compact with All Nigerians (SERVICOM) to reflect on strategies for improving citizen-centred service delivery.

INEC stressed that public trust in the electoral system is influenced not only by policies and procedures but also by how effectively and respectfully its personnel engage the public.

Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash O. Amupitan (SAN), National Commissioner and Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, described Customer Service Week as an opportunity to appreciate both staff and stakeholders while reaffirming INEC’s commitment to excellence in public service.

According to her, every employee serves as an ambassador of the Commission, and every interaction with voters, political parties, colleagues, and members of the public contributes to the perception of the institution.

She urged staff members to take ownership of their responsibilities, develop practical solutions to workplace challenges, and offer support beyond the minimum requirements of their official duties.

INEC noted that the concept of “going the extra mile” involves making additional efforts to ensure assignments are completed efficiently, citizens receive adequate assistance, and services are delivered with professionalism and integrity.

The Commission further emphasized that quality customer service should become an enduring institutional culture rather than a practice limited to commemorative events.

Among dignitaries present at the celebration were Prof. Kunle Ajayi, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Board of The Electoral Institute, and Prof. Sunday Aha, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Board of Survey and Technical Committee on Equipment Acquisition (BOSTEAC).

INEC also highlighted its constitutional responsibilities, including voter education, civic engagement, voter registration, PVC distribution, electoral information dissemination, and the conduct of elections and referendums.

The Commission noted that it was currently carrying out activities related to the display of the voters’ register and distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), underscoring its commitment to ensuring eligible Nigerians can participate in the electoral process.

It reiterated the importance of prompt responses to public correspondence, adherence to due process in contract administration, and maintaining accessible communication channels for citizens seeking information and engagement with the Commission.
